Unfortunately, due to the fact that I was recovering from recent surgery, Ivy and I were unable to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Fellowship Luncheon on 24th April 2021. In my absence, the meeting was chaired by the Vice President, Graham Henry. Everybody that I spoke to after the event, commented on how well Graham conducted both the AGM and the Fellowship Luncheon, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all............

Subject to COVID19 restrictions, the No 2 Squadron Branch 2021 Annual General Meeting and Fellowship Luncheon is scheduled to be held at the Brighton Beach Hotel (formerly known as Milano’s Tavern), 4 The Esplanade, Brighton Victoria on Saturday, 24th April 2021. The name of the function space we have booked is ‘Brighton & Esplanade Rooms’ which are
located on the first floor.

From the President:

The Committee has made a tentative booking to hold our AGM and luncheon at the Brighton Beach Hotel (formerly known as Milano’s Tavern) on Saturday, 24th April 2021. The Committee will meet on the Friday, 12th February 2021 to review the COVID19 situation and make a final decision on whether the AGM and luncheon will go ahead or we revert back to holding the AGM on BlueJeans, as we did last year. The decision will be advised in the February Newsletter.

Ronald Richards - Memories of a Loving Daughter

Ron Richards joined the RAAF on 9th February 1940 and was discharged on 26th November 1945 having served with No 2 Squadron during World War 2 in New Guinea and Darwin.

In response to a call for photographs from 2 Squadron Branch’s John Elliott, he was contacted by Mrs Margot Goodwin, daughter of Ron Richards, who wanted to tell the story of her father’s service. The following are the memories of a loving daughter and a copy of an interview with her Dad in 1988, in which he shares memories of his war service.

The Roulettes will conduct a flypast at 1100h in a missing wingman formation over the National Vietnam Veterans Museum, 25 Veterans Drive, Newhaven............

In this issue:

A BRIEF HISTORY OF 2 SQUADRON

No 2 Squadron formed at Kantara, Egypt, in September 1916 and left for England soon after, working up to full personnel strength in scout and artillery observation roles in the RFC. Led by Maj Oswald Watt, the squadron deployed to Baizieux, France, in September 1917 in support of the British 3rd Army. The squadron began combat operations flying DH5 scouts over the Western Front on 1 October 1917. Initially, more engine problems were encountered than the enemy. For the first two months, the Squadron was engaged in scout work and close offensive patrol. Enemy engagements were largely indecisive due to the faster German Albatross machines.......

CANCELLATION OF NO 2 SQUADRON (RAAF) ASSOCIATION INC. (A0043384X)


In line with the Special Resolution passed at the Branch’s Annual General Meeting on the 4th May 2020, an application has been submitted to Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) for the cancellation of incorporation. CAV acknowledged receipt in a letter dated 3rd June 2020 and advised that it will process the cancellation, which involves the placement of a notice
on the CAV’s website and in the Victoria Government Gazette.........

In Memory of Two Brave Squadrons

On 19 February, as the bombing of Darwin in 1942 was re-enacted with air raid sirens, guns and fighter planes, WWII veteran Brian Winspear, 98, was there to unveil a long-awaited plaque in recognition of his fallen No2 and No13 Squadron colleagues.
