Vietnam 50 Commemorative Dinner

To commemorate the 50^th Anniversary of Australia’s disengagement from operations in the Vietnam War., the Association will host a three course dinner, at the Vibe Hotel Canberra Airport on Thursday, 19 October 2023. WGCDR Sharon Bown AM (Retd) has accepted an invitation to be guest speaker, and her topic will be “Dust Off – Vietnam to Afghanistan”.

The dinner is open to members and their guests. Attendance is limited to 120 guests. Early expressions of interest are encouraged .

Dress for the occasion is lounge suit for gentlemen, and ladies' equivalent. Bookings close at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, 4 October, unless oversubscribed earlier

Remembrance Commemoration Point Cook & ‘Overturning the Gallipoli Myth’ presentation by Hugh Dolan’

After the past few years of COVID restrictions, Air Force Association – Victoria is pleased to announce that planning is underway for the Annual Pilgrimage and Service to be held at Point Cook on Sunday 6th November 2022.

The formal Ceremony and proceedings will be conducted in the morning at RAAF Base Point Cook. This will then be followed by a luncheon at the combined Officers/Sergeants Mess at Laverton Base, with a presentation by our special Guest Speaker, Hugh Dolan.

AFA CENTENARY FUNCTION - CANBERRA

BRANCH PRESIDENTS' MEETING & CHRISTMAS PARTY

AFA quarterly Branch Presidents' meeting, commencing at 10.30 a.m., followed by the AFA Annual Christmas Party commencing at 12 noon. All members welcome to the Christmas Party.

This year our guest speaker will be SQNLDR Glen Coy, the Operations Manager of the Air Force Museum. Glen will provide us with a general briefing of the activities that are ongoing at the Museum, along with some of the difficulties with maintaining and scheduling of the aircraft that the Museum operate. Keeping these old aircraft in an airworthy condition is not an easy task, let alone the challenges of keeping the pilots suitably qualified.

We will also be unveiling another painting of Point Cook in 1914 by the distinguished aviation artist Norm Clifford. Our thanks go to Ted Bushell for this most generous gift.

We may be restricted by numbers, so I request that you advise Barb Stallard on 9813 4600 or office@raafavic.org.au, if you plan to attend. Once we reach capacity, we will have to close the books and run a standby list in case anyone cancels prior to the day.

Meet-A-Mate - Keynote Speaker Wing Commander (Retd) Sharon Bown

The next AFA-Vic Meet-A-Mate function will be an address by Wing Commander (Retd) Sharon Bown, who will speak about her deployment experiences in Timor-East and Afghanistan. Sharon's presentation will be followed by a light lunch. There will also be background music provided by the Air Force Band Wind Quartet during lunch.

Meet-A-Mate - Visit to Air Force Museum Pt Cook

Meet-A-Mate / Mid Year Function

Guest Speaker will be AFA member Jack Bell. Jack is a sprightly centenarian and recently spoke at the Shrine of Remembrance for the Victory in Europe commemoration. As well as covering his Air Force service in WW2, Jack also spoke of his experience as a prisoner of war. All who heard Jack speak at the Shrine were amazed with not only the story he told, but specifically the message he most strongly made - that of compassion. It was truly an uplifting presentation, something that we as Air Force Association members can be extremely proud of.

MEET-A-MATE Air Power in the Gallipoli Campaign

Presentation by Hugh Dolan, author and historian.
Hugh Dolan is a former RAAF intelligence officer and author of a series of historical graphic novels.
Learn how air power was used extensively during the Gallipoli Campaign and the intelligence provided to the commanders and planners before and after the landings. Hugh Dolan, after intensive research, has changed what we know about Gallipoli.
The presentation, lasting about one hour, will be followed by a light lunch. Bus from East Hawthorn is available.

2017 Merz Lecture – McDonnell Douglas Phantom F4-E

Friends of the RAAF Museum are hosting their annual Merz Lecture at Point Cook on 18 November. The Merz Lecture is a series of lectures on RAAF aircraft, named after George Merz who was the first Australian Flying Corps pilot killed in action in WW1.

This year’s lecture will focus on the McDonnell Douglas Phantom F4-E in RAAF service and will cover training, ferrying to and from Australia and operations.

Guest speakers AVM (Ret’d) Dave Rogers and WGCDR (Ret’d) Lance Halvorson MBE (Ret’d) were Australian Phantom crew members, as pilot and navigator respectively and will be sharing their experiences and stories about this iconic aircraft.
